The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gowon Estate Division, in Lagos State, has been removed for allegedly detaining a lawyer who was seeking justice for his client.

According to Hundeyin, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, ordered the immediate removal of the officer from the division.

He said that this followed the conclusion of investigations into the allegations made against the DPO, as published in the media on Jan. 4.

He said that the DPO would be removed pending a review of his case by other supervisory authorities.

“The CP had earlier ordered a thorough investigation into the matter upon receipt of the publication.

“CP Fayoade has equally directed the OC Legal of the Command to initiate steps to reach out to the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State Branch, to enable a round table discussion.

“The meeting is aimed at preventing a recurrence of the avoidable incident and enhancing better Police-Lawyers relationship,” he said.

Unjust Incident: Ogun State Police Officer's Refusal to Acknowledge Wrongdoing and Apologize

In a recent incident at the Alidodo Hotel, I experienced an unsettling encounter with a group of police officers. The situation took a distressing turn when one officer made derogatory remarks, branding me as handicapped, and shockingly refusing to express any remorse for his actions.

Approximately 40 minutes before recounting this incident, I found myself in an unexpected and distressing situation. While in the hotel's restroom, I overheard a familiar voice. Upon shouting the name "Junior," I was met with a shocking response. The officer, without any basis, questioned whether I had lost my leg and callously dismissed the possibility of having made such a statement.

In an attempt to assert my innocence and perhaps elicit an apology, I chose a unique approach. I left the restroom unclothed, expecting that the officers, upon seeing my vulnerability, would reconsider their statements and offer an apology. However, to my dismay, the officer responsible for the offensive remark remained steadfast in his refusal to apologize.

Despite my outcry, the officer in question adamantly stuck to his claim that he had not used any offensive language. Even after admitting to referring to me as handicapped or a "no leg man," he failed to recognize the impact of his words and the distress it caused. This refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing raises concerns about accountability within law enforcement.

I expressed my deep emotional distress, highlighting that such derogatory statements could lead someone to contemplate suicide. The refusal of the officer to offer a simple apology amplifies the gravity of the situation and the potential long-lasting effects on the mental well-being of individuals subjected to such treatment.

This incident sheds light on the importance of accountability and empathy within law enforcement. It serves as a stark reminder that acknowledging mistakes and offering sincere apologies are crucial components of maintaining trust between the police force and the community. Instances like these underscore the need for continued efforts to foster understanding, empathy, and respect within law enforcement agencies.

Mob kills two over alleged murder in Ogun

Two yet-to-be-identified persons were reportedly lynched by a mob for allegedly killing a 12-year-old boy, Ayomide Agunbiade, for ritual purposes in the Odo Alaro area of Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State on Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Agunbiade had gone missing on Christmas Day (Monday) which was his birthday after someone identified to be his uncle had come to pick him up in the absence of his mother that he wanted to celebrate his birthday with him.

A village elder who pleaded anonymity because he was not permitted to speak on the matter told our correspondent that it was when the case of the missing child was escalated within the community on Tuesday that a boy, said to have witnessed the moment the missing boy went with his uncle, told the search party that an uncle took him out on Monday.

The source further informed PUNCH Metro that when the uncle was confronted about the allegation of knowing the whereabouts of the missing boy, he denied anything about his whereabouts but that the boy insisted that he was the one who came to pick him for the birthday celebration.

It was also gathered that upon further interrogation by some community members, the said uncle confessed to know Agunbiade’s whereabouts but told them that he had killed him for ritual purposes.

The source said, “The boy went missing on Christmas Day (Monday) which was his birthday. We learnt that an uncle of his had come to pick him up when his mother was not at home. He was playing with other children in the community when the man came to pick him up that he wanted to celebrate his birthday with him. “It was yesterday (Tuesday), when the family began to look for him but couldn’t find him that they raised the alarm in the community before a boy whom they were playing together with told the family that it was an uncle that came to pick him for his birthday celebration.

“When we asked the man to take us to the place the child was, he and one other guy took us to an uncompleted building where we found the body of Ayomide with his head missing.

“It was the sight of the state of Ayomide (Agunbiade) that infuriated the crowd who had gathered in numbers. The crowd descended on them and lynched them before police officers came around and took their bodies away.”

When contacted for a reaction, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, did not respond to messages sent to her and did not reply to calls made to her line as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, a senior police source close to the community confirmed the incident but declined to comment further for lack of authority to speak with the media.

“The incident truly happened but you know I cannot make comments on it because I am not authorised to speak with the media.”

Lagos police nab woman for bathing husband with hot water

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a lady identified as Dorcas Oluwabukola for allegedly pouring hot water on her husband in the Meiran area of the state over suspicion of infidelity.

A police source, who did not want to be mentioned in the media, in the Meiran division, told PUNCH Metro that the suspect would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department once the investigation was completed.

PUNCH Metro reports that the incident, which was said to have happened about five days ago, was trending on multiple social media handles, with claims that the wife became irked after the husband attended his childhood friend’s wedding without her company.

This was believed to have led to an altercation between the couple, leading the wife to commit the alleged crime. While assuring the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, the police source said the division was monitoring the progress of the husband, who had been hospitalised since the incident.

The source said, “It is true the incident happened. The incident happened about six days ago. It was a true story. She poured hot water on her husband purposely because she felt that he cheated on her.

“They were supposed to go to a party together. However, the husband went all alone. We are still monitoring the progress of the husband because he has been hospitalised since that day. He has not been discharged. We arrested the wife immediately because that is a capital offence. There is no option for bail. We are waiting for the appropriate time for us to move the case to the state CID.”

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, was not available for comment as of the time this report was filed.
