Cristiano Ronaldo wins 2016 Ballon d’Or
Cristiano Ronaldo wins 2016 Ballon d’Or

The prolific forward has been recognised for firing Real Madrid to Champions League glory before then lifting the European Championship with Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten off competition from the likes of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to claim his fourth Ballon d'Or.

The prolific Portuguese, who previously lifted the prestigious prize in 2008, 2013 and 2014, has enjoyed arguably the most successful year of his illustrious career, winning the Champions League with Real Madrid before captaining his country to European Championship glory in France.

Messi, who boasts a record five Ballons d'Or, helped Barcelona win a domestic double last season but his dream of leading Argentina to a major international title was dashed by a penalty-shootout loss to Chile in the final of the Copa America.

As for Griezmann, the 24-year-old attacker fired both Atletico Madrid and France to the finals of the Champions League and Euro 2016, respectively, but he suffered the agony of defeat on both occasions.

Ronaldo, by contrast, tasted nothing but success over the summer by converting the winning spot-kick in Real's 11th European Cup triumph, in May, and then cheer-leading the Seleccao to victory over France in Paris just over six weeks later.

With the 31-year-old having already finished top of the Goal 50 and now claimed another Ballon d'Or, he is set to complete a hat-trick of individual honours for 2016 when FIFA announces the winner of its Best Player award in January.

Plane carrying Copa Sudamericana finalists Chapecoense crashes, 76 confirmed dead
Plane carrying Chapecoense players crashes

76 have lost their lives so far, as the plane carrying 81 went down near Medellin; Colombia ahead of the 1st leg clash.
Football fans woke up on Tuesday to tragic news, as it was reported that a plane carrying players of the Brazilian club Chapecoense crashed. The accident happened to a plane headed for Medellin, Colombia.
81 people – 72 of which were passengers – were reported to be on board that plane, including players of the club, when it went down. As written by the BBC, the plane reported electric problems; whilst Radio Caracol claim that the plane “lost contact with the control tower when flying through the municipality of La Ceja, near Medellin”.

The radio station went on to reveal that 10 survivors have been found, citing “authorities of the municipality of La Union, Antioquia” as their source. Three of the 10 survivors are believed to be Chapecoense players. BBC claim that Alan Ruschel and Danilo are of the survivors.

Sadly, a Medellin police officer revealed to Radio Caracol that they fear 75 people have lost their life after the crash. The Mayor also disclosed that rain has hampered their rescue mission.

Shortly afterwards, confirmation of the aforementioned death toll was confirmed via Commander Jose Gerardo Acevedo of the Medellin Police. The tragic news came via Twitter.

The South American football association (CONMEBOL) wrote a statement in which they suspended all activities. They said: "The Conmebol family greatly regrets what happened. All activities of the confederation are suspended until further notice," it said.
The club, who ply their trade in the Brazilian top-flight, were flying to Colombia to play the first-leg of the Copa Sudamericana final with reigning Cope Libertadores champions Atletico Nacional.

Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his defence and has been watching the Austria star, with international team-mate Julian Baumgartlinger also under consideration

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba and hope to beat Real Madrid to his signature, according to the Sunday People.

The Red Devils scouted the Austria international twice during the international break in games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovakia
.
Mourinho also wants Alaba's Austria team-mate, Julian Baumgartlinger, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin set to leave.

Ronaldo: I've done everything to win Ballon d'Or, I want it

Ronaldo: I've done everything to win Ballon d'Or, I want it
After winning the Champions League and Euro 2016 in what he says was his best season, the Real Madrid star has the prestigious award in his sights
Cristiano Ronaldo believes he has done everything possible to win the 2016 Ballon d'Or prize.

The 31-year-old is among the favourites to claim France Football's award for the world's best player after a stellar 12 months for club and country.

Ronaldo hit 51 goals in 48 matches in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, including 16 in 12 Champions League appearances as Zinedine Zidane's side won the trophy for the second time in three years.

The forward then captained Portugal to their first major title at Euro 2016, scoring three times to help them reach the final, where a solitary strike from Eder secured a 1-0 win over France.
Ronaldo, who has been criticised for some of his performances in 2016-17, struck a hat-trick as Madrid beat city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday, prompting Zidane to claim that any debate over who should win the Ballon d'Or should now end.

And the player himself feels he could not have done any more to earn the prize following what he considers to have been the best season of his illustrious career.
"I've done everything for this season," he told Telefoot. "We won the Champions League, I won the Euros with Portugal. The vote doesn't depend on me and I don't want to be obsessed with it.

"But if you ask me if I want to win the Ballon d'Or, I'd say yes. This year has been amazing for me, with all the trophies. It's my best season, no doubt about that."
Eden Hazard makes 150th Premier League appearance for Chelsea
Eden Hazard makes 150th Premier League appearance for Chelsea

The 25-year-old is enjoying himself under new manager Antonio Conte, scoring seven goals in the Blues' opening 11 fixtures and assisting another
Eden Hazard made his 150th Premier League appearance for Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as Antonio Conte's side travelled to Middlesbrough.

The Belgium international has hit the headlines this season following a sublime start to the campaign, scoring seven goals and assisting another in the Blues' 11 opening fixtures.
Hazard received heavy criticism for his disappointing form during the 2015-16 season, having been awarded the PFA Player of the Season award for the season previous.

However, new manager Conte has breathed fresh life into the diminutive playmaker and given him a starring role in his favoured 3-5-2 formation.

Hazard's sterling performance in Chelsea's 5-0 thrashing of Everton last time out drew comparisons to when he was enjoying his best form, as he scored twice and played a major part in the other goals to put his side top of the Premier League.

He has the opportunity to do just that on Sunday as they look to break what has been a resilient Boro side so far this season.

Moses urges Chelsea to hold on to Premier League top spot

The Blues's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough took them to the summit on Sunday and their Nigeria international wing-back hopes they stay there until May
Victor Moses wants Chelsea to hold on to top spot for the rest of the Premier League season following their 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Diego Costa's 10th league goal of the season at the Riverside Stadium gave Antonio Conte's side a sixth top-flight win in a row and took them a point clear of Liverpool and Manchester City in the standings.

And Moses, who was named man-of-the-match as he continued his exceptional run of form, is determined to stay ahead of the chasing pack between now and next May.

"The Premier League is harder every season, so we just want to make sure we stay on top now," he told Sky Sports.

"We showed a lot of character today. In the second half they came at us but we were really strong at the back.

"I'm delighted to be in the first 11. I just want to keep on enjoying my form.
"I've been on loan three times, but we've got a good manager here who wants to give the young players a chance, so I just want to stay in the starting 11 now."
Centre-back Gary Cahill admits that the recent international break came at a frustrating time for Chelsea, given the level of confidence among the players as a result of their indomitable form.
"Confidence is up, spirit is up within the side," he said. "We almost didn't want the break to come but we did well.

"When you're winning games it's easy to go out there and play and train well. But with the internationals it's always harder.

World Cup Bombshell For Buhari: Dalung kicks against Nigeria’s participation
Image result for nigeria team should withdraw by sport minister

Nigerian sports minister Solomon Dalung has sparked off another controversy after he said the government should withdraw its sponsorship of the Super Eagles qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup because it is too expensive.

He said money saved by government from such a withdrawal could be better invested in developing the game, while also arguing that African countries should make the AFCON top priority and not the World Cup.

Dalung made his controversial suggestions on a radio interview with the Voice of America Hausa Service.

He called on the country’s government to withdraw its sponsorship of the Super Eagles on their journey to Russia 2018, stressing that the Nations Cup and not the World Cup should be the priority of all Africa countries including Nigeria.

He said World Cup qualification was money consuming and energy sapping and would rather advise Nigeria and other African countries invest these funds into more meaningful ventures to develop the game at all levels.

The government had to bail out the Super Eagles with a 100 million Naira for them to fly out to Zambia in October.

Nigeria lead their qualifying group with six points after two rounds of matches, ahead of Cameroon (two points), Zambia (a point) and Algeria (a point).

The minister’s latest comments will come as a rude shock to chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who have maintained a steady and cordial relationship with the minister in recent times.

Dalung was leader of delegation when the Eagles went, saw and conquered in Ndola against Zambia and he also accompanied Nigerian Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to visit the Eagles in training before the match against Algeria.
Missing Messi and Suarez not an excuse for Busquets
The Argentine and Uruguayan sharpshooters were unavailable as Carlos Kameni kept the hosts at bay with a string of top-drawer saves on Saturday
Missing Messi and Suarez not an excuse for Busquets

Sergio Busquets says Barcelona cannot blame their 0-0 draw with nine-man Malaga on the absence of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

The champions were thwarted by a lack of cutting edge up front and a brilliant performance from visiting goalkeeper Carlos Kameni as they handed a boost to leaders Real Madrid in LaLiga's title race.

Barca's attack was noticeably blunted without Messi, who withdrew from the squad shortly before kick-off due to an illness, and the suspended Suarez.
Busquets, however, feels it was a matter of luck deserting his side as they dropped points at Camp Nou for the third time this season.

"Messi and Suarez are two of the best and you always miss them, but it's not an excuse. We tried a thousand times and we couldn't score," he told BeIn Sports.

"We wanted to get all three points. They sat back and it was really difficult to beat them.
"We put a few more crosses into the box in the second half but we're missing a bit of luck at the moment. They wanted to defend, that was their game-plan and we couldn't find a way through.

"We knew they would play with five in defence but they played with everyone behind the ball. We knew they would and we know these kind of games are difficult. We scored goals that were disallowed and we missed out on the points."

Kameni produced a number of fine saves, particularly against Rafinha and Neymar, to ensure a point for Malaga despite the second-half red cards for Diego Llorente and Juankar.
The 32-year-old keeper admitted he feared the worst when Llorente was sent off with 22 minutes left, but he was delighted with the commitment of his side.

"It's very difficult to keep a clean sheet here. It's not just a physical game, it's very tactical and that's very tiring," he said.

"Of course when we went down to 10, I thought we would probably lose. It's hard enough to play with 11. But we had to play with that extra bit of effort."

Kameni, who needed treatment after injuring his leg in the closing stages, added: "I hope that it's nothing bad, I don't think it is. But I'm just going to enjoy the result."
Toure gets standing ovation from Man City team-mates as Guardiola confirms he will stay in squad
The midfielder made a shock return at Crystal Palace and after scoring twice in a 2-1 win his manager and team-mates showed their appreciation

Pep Guardiola says Yaya Toure is now firmly back in his Manchester City plans season after the Ivorian made a stunning return to the line-up with two goals at Crystal Palace.

Goal understands Toure was also given a standing ovation by his team-mates when he entered the Selhurst Park away dressing room after the match.

It represents a remarkable turnaround for the midfielder, who had appeared to be heading for an ignominious final season at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola had said earlier in the campaign that Toure would not be part of the City squad until he apologised for comments made by his outspoken agent, Dimitri Seluk, and even when the apology did arrive at the end of October it had still appeared unlikely that the 33-year-old would ever play for City again.

But on Saturday he was named in the starting line up at Selhurst Park and scored twice in a hard-fought 2-1 win for Guardiola’s men that sends them level on points with league leaders Liverpool.

And the City boss says this was far from a cameo from Toure, who can now expect to play a role across the remainder of the campaign, even if he is not registered to play in the Champions League.

“I would say that his performance is not about my decision, it’s about his quality,” Guardiola told the press after the match. “Yaya was the last month or two months training really good, his physical condition, his weight, is better than ever, and I’m so happy for him, and especially for his family.

“I’m so happy because he’s now a real part of the team and he can help us to achieve our targets because we need all the players, because it’s so demanding with the Premier League and the Champions League and the cup and so on.”

Toure’s team-mates, particularly Kelechi Iheanacho, Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna, gleefully celebrated on the pitch after the final whistle and the reception afforded to him by the rest of the squad when he returned to the dressing room highlights his enduring popularity at the club.

Guardiola says that is no surprise given his importance to the club since he arrived from Barcelona in 2010.

“Yaya is a guy who is here
for five or six years and it’s a guy who’s got a lot of experience and of course the quality, and the team-mates and the staff appreciate him a lot, so there’s no doubts about that, he was so happy.”

He added: “His reaction… Yaya is a normal guy, his emotions are quiet, he was calm before the game. I don’t think it’s the first Premier League game for him, so he has the experience to handle this kind of situation.”
Yaya Toure's Man City comeback is as crazy as it was unexpected

The Ivorian would have made headlines no matter what would have happened after he was named on Pep Guardiola's team sheet, but nobody expected this

Team news announcements rarely contain too many genuine shocks, but news of  Yaya Toure’s inclusion for Manchester City against Crystal Palace had the Selhurst Park press room resembling something like an office on Wall Street during the financial crisis.

What was this? How had this happened? Had City’s social media team made a genuine clanger? Surely there was no way Toure, all but a former Manchester City player, was to be trusted by Pep Guardiola.

He was you know.
After more than two months in exile, and with seemingly no way back, Toure returned. It confounded everything anybody who covers the club (first and foremost me) thought they (we) had known.

That Toure’s one prior appearance of the season came against Steaua Bucharest when City had a 5-0 aggregate lead said everything about his place in Guardiola’s early season plans: he didn’t have one.

Not long afterwards he was left out of the Champions League squad all together and Guardiola quickly made it known the Ivorian would have no way back until he apologised for the various incendiary comments made by his agent, Dimitri Seluk, over the last few years.

Seluk took the bait and launched further tirades, and would continue to do so for the following weeks.
Even when Toure apologised (and Seluk immediately claimed he shouldn’t have), it appeared the midfielder had no chance of getting back into the side.

After all, Guardiola had initially said it was a tough decision to leave both he and 19-year-old Aleix Garcia out of his European squad. Garcia, it was supposed, would have taken up a midfield role if Fernandinho or Fernando (or Fabian Delph) were not up to the job.

So how could anybody have known Toure would be there on the team sheet for a meaningful Premier League match?

Perhaps alarm bells should have rung for me personally during the international break when, during a conversation regarding Toure’s plans to buy property abroad, Seluk told me that he was no longer giving interviews, or indeed getting involved in any stories, much less any that could upset City.

It was not clear at the time whether that was merely a ploy to cut the conversation short, or whether it was as clear a sign as any to date that Toure and his camp have made peace with the club. In hindsight, it seems obvious it was the latter. Or quite possibly both.

As chaos reigned following the announcement that Toure would start against Palace, one well-placed City source indicated Toure had been “training like a demon” in recent weeks.

Indeed, the 33-year-old did appear to be in fine shape when he trotted out onto a football pitch for the first time since August 24th.

Not that he looked particularly limber in the opening exchanges, when he seemed keen not to stray too far from Fernandinho, the new king of the City midfield, and struggled to have a touch for much of the opening period. In fact, for the opening 38 minutes he looked a much more inhibited version of his former self, as if he had been expressly told to not do what he always used to.

Then it happened.

Stood calmly on the edge of the box, he took a few touches, passed it to Nolito and manoeuvred himself into a bit of space. At this point it must have all come rushing back to him. Everything he had forgotten over the last two and a bit months came flooding back.

A ball! Some space! The whites of the goalkeeper’s eyes! He drew his right leg back and the end result was as it has been on so many occasions over the last five years: a Yaya Toure goal.

It came via a small deflection, sure, but let the man have his moment and, please, do not let it detract from just how unlikely this had all seemed up until 13:59 on Saturday, November 19.
But would that be it? City came under pressure after half-time and it did not look like Toure would get his moment when Connor Wickham fired in an equaliser.

Toure, in truth, did not do a great deal else other than find the back of the net. It was a surprise when Guardiola decided to keep him on but take off Nolito and bring on David Silva, if not considering Toure’s lack of match practice as anything else.

There were one or two passes, certainly, but nothing that really stood out.
And then it happened again. With City staring down the barrel of their fourth 1-1 draw in five Premier League games (having gone within inches of making it 2-0 just before conceding), Toure only went and won it.

Silva stepped over Kevin De Bruyne’s low corner and there, remarkably, was Toure. Again! He may not have marauded through the midfield, he may not have pinged a long-range pass, he may not have given Palace too much to worry about for the rest of the match, but he certainly still knows what to do when in a bit of space in the box.

This time he stuck out his right leg and guided the ball delicately in at the far post. Pandemonium in the away end. Those fans saw Toure put in a monstrous performance here to help City towards the title in 2014 but perhaps this one will live even longer in the memory.

One man was so delirious his celebrations spilled over onto the pitch even though he still had his young daughter on his shoulders.

This was truly a remarkable occasion. Toure was not supposed to get a look-in, he was supposed to hang around for the rest of the season, never play again and then leave under a cloud in the summer.

Instead, here he is. The fans sing his name. Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta and Kelechi Iheanacho cannot contain their delight as they walk off the pitch. Even Pep Guardiola gives him a hug!
