THE ASIWAJU YINKA MAFE PRINCIPALS' CUP: A RETURN TO OUR NASCENCE THROUGH SPORTS

  By... Balogun Ridwan Adetayo

We lived those years relishing the prospects of seeing our favourite street footballers bring in their football boots and entertain fans. The interaction within the township was astonishing and everyone had connection to the cup, one way or the other. It was then the Principals' Cup and always provided teams who went as far as representing Ogun State in the National Shell Cup. I remember vividly seeing Remo Divisional High School trade tackles with a school from Sokoto in a Shell Cup final- the brilliance within was always awesome. Football took away crime off the streets and those football moments have lead to some people getting blissful careers out of football, in different capacities.

I saw the Principals' Cup advert via social media, Facebook and the first thing I got excited about was the beauty behind those moments of past and was totally amiss of who the sponsor was. Asiwaju Yinka Mafe may not know the extent of the importance of this singular action but it will stay on minds for years. I remember Remo Divisional High School vs Remo Secondary School was always a cracker, they were really contentious matches and platforms on which many people built their futures. Methodist, St.John's, Ode Lemo were other brilliant teams that wowed fans with their tantalising display of quality.

Days when secondary school boys left home early enough to make it to school in order to get a chance to represent their school in competitions have been missed in Remo. What we've had recently has been belittling and highly unexpected of a region with sprawling brilliance like ours. Sports has always been a mechanism to take crime to the bin and its absence for sometime now has been consequential to the level of understanding of social interaction  displayed by our people.

This competition is a good breeding ground for the new trajectory the region is taking in sports especially football with the recent promotion of Remo Stars into the fast-growing NPFL. There are under-15 teams expected of every team in the league and it's a great opportunity for the coaches to have a readymade niche to pounce on. We are Remonites and we love sports and are intelligent people. This is a beautiful project and credit must go to Asiwaju Yinka Mafe for deeming it fit to take us back to the years of glee and of unending sweet memories.

    The School Bus Programme

Education, they say is a tool for the oppressed to have a voice, change his story from gory to glory and make him a great in whatever he chooses to. As a Sagamite who is interested in his environment and observant enough to know what's happening, I have butterflies in my stomach for this news of a School Bus Programme for school kids. For the many average and below average families who I see their kids walk miles daily, it is a superb welcome development and one that proves how concerned Asiwaju Yinka Mafe with what he sees. The number of students and pupils I see on their feet daily are enormous and open to many societal misdemeanors. The provision of buses to ease transport is a mechanism to ease the cost of transportation for some parents and will give these students more time for their books and open their eyes to the many possibilities of a good governance within their environment. We are breeding a strong future and should always be assured of the fact that these kids are the tomorrow we strive to save.

Asiwaju Yinka Mafe has proven for the umpteenth time that he's interested in the growth of his constituency and his people alike and this is coming with actions as there's a difference between menu and the food itself. He is indeed working his talk.

This is not a post to deify the works of a man but at 24 and having actively and passively participated in how elections panned out since I was 10, he is the most impressive politician that has represented this region and by a mile. Like every human, he has his weaknesses but for bringing us back to our beautiful nascence, Asiwaju Yinka Mafe  deserves all these and more.

 My brief!
