Tanker Full of Diesel Overturns Near Obadeyi, Causes Traffic Disruption on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
[Lagos, Nigeria - October 19, 2023] — A tanker carrying a substantial load of diesel suffered a catastrophic accident near the Obadeyi area, leading to significant traffic disruption along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The incident, which occurred this morning, is attributed to brake failure, according to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official, Adebayo Taofeek.
At approximately 8:30 AM local time, the tanker was descending the slope near Obadeyi when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure. The resulting accident caused the tanker to overturn, spilling diesel onto the road.
Adebayo Taofeek, a spokesperson for LASTMA, stated, "Our preliminary investigation suggests that the primary cause of this accident was brake failure. Our team responded promptly to the scene to ensure the safety of all involved and to manage traffic flow."
No casualties were reported as a result of the incident, thanks to the rapid response of emergency services and the cooperation of motorists in the area. However, the diesel spillage posed a risk, and immediate action was taken to contain it.
Firefighters and environmental response teams were deployed to the scene to mitigate any potential environmental impact. A safety cordon was established around the area to prevent any unauthorized access.
The Lagos State Government is working diligently to address the traffic congestion resulting from the accident, with LASTMA and other relevant agencies diverting traffic and providing alternate routes for commuters.
Commuters are advised to exercise patience and caution when traveling through the affected area, as clean-up and recovery efforts are expected to take some time.
The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, has also initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the brake failure and the condition of the tanker to prevent similar incidents in the future.
